Keep it going guys! It's tight but between the ten of us we can do it.

If you find there is anything you need to do your work which you do not yet have WRITE IT DOWN immediately! SPEAK TO SOMEONE about it asap about it so we can make sure it is in your hands for you when are ready for it. Thinking ahead here is key! It is essential for you to LET OTHERS KNOW.

Three days means you have one each for scanning, colouring, and compositing - so if the clean animation for any of your scenes are not done yet you best be juggling the work! Get others to help you and offer to help others. If you find yourself sitting around please ask your group members if they are in need of your assistance.

Communication is important here guys, let's work smart. We can pull miracles out of our rears and amaze ourselves with how much we can do when it's down to the wire!

Ecks Cleanup Tips & Reminders

1 - The top lip has that middle blob thing. I don't have the time to look the name up. But she has one. The pointy part of her upper lip is connected to the base of the nose with their construction, but don't completely connect the clean line to it.

2 - The nose is a 3 sided pyramid. NO NOSTRILS!

3 - The eyes/glasses are treated with the regular line weight - we all agreed it would be the easiest to keep it consistant. Two bags under the eyes, the line closest to the eye is the shortest.

4 - The eyebrows are treated like the hair. BUT make sure the two outer lines of each eyebrow are animated with care, mind your volumes. Fill the rest of the eyebrow shape with stray lines, just like the big hair strands. Any questions about this, don't be shy, I'm always around in the studio.

5 - The top of the head is flat, the hair part of her head starts at the 2/3rd mark. Her hair crosses on her forehead, it doesn't just meet at the center. Treated the same as the major hair strands.

6 - Ecks has 2 major hair strands on a 3/4 view. See design pack for other views.

7 - Ecks has a mole! On the left hand side of her neck, and coloured in with graphite. Try to make sure it doesn't float while animating.

8 - Her shoulders are covered by a short sleeve. It can be hinted at with a slight change of direction on the line. Remember that if you were to follow the line from her armpit down, it connects to the side of her boob.

9 - Her earrings are circular, but don't be afraid to treat them as ellipses if it helps to clear her face in an important shot if it was left as a circle, and especially during follow through.

10 - The line of the bottom of her face flows into her neck as a single line. Only add some overlap in there if Ecks is pulling her head into her shoulders in specific poses. Be careful with the chin, like the mole, that it doesn't float when animated.

Her nails are also coloured in with graphite. Be careful about her hand proportions - her fingers should NEVER be longer than the plam of her hand.

I did play with the "correction" of the title but it's my professional opinion that it looks stupid and eats up time.
Not the exact length of the scene, but I'm still going to play with how it fits with the surrounding scenes and the transition to and from black.

Hopefully this sparks a little more discussion! Don't make me email you!! Hah.

I feel we should have a real discussion about this, however brief.

End credits - how do we want to do this? Who would we like to thank? Are they really going to be as long in the final cut as they are right now?

I would like to design them to match the titles.

BECAUSE IT'S FINALLY SPRING!

My e-mail got cut short because I pressed "Send" instead of "Save". Still had a bit more to say, but I didn't want to be flooding you with emails. Because I know I'll think of more. Also, we should all know about feeds since Wednesday's great demo.

Fifth is a reminder to remember those ABCs. As in, don't touch the Cs before you touch the As.

Sixth is a reminder that the pipeline is being supervised. If your roughs aren't in by end of day Monday, I'll want to know when they'll be in, not why they aren't.

Seventh is a reminder to have fun, of course.

Lots of good quality digital video of animated title sequences on there. I'm browsing to research title design, I swears it!

Doesn't have much to do with our film, really... other than, like our film, being totally awesome.

The Danse Macabre in a form I can get behind.
I loves me some Gattaca and it pleases me greatly to read the only digital element of the sequence was for setting some type - suck it Dexter.

Didn't bother uploading this one on Vimeo hahaha. Well here it is. I still want to do some touch ups, to the effects. Also there was a few problems matching it perfect due to my scanner that's smaller than the animation paper. However I must say I'm happy with how it turned out. Hope you feel the same. It was colored and made to the final thing with the effects and Post work in maybe 3hrs. So I feel confident about this compositing method. I will do a demo. Also for the colors I used Angela's examples but slightly tweaked to look good with the lighting and BG. Hope you like it.

I think it would look cool to close his eyes and then the lights slowly come on. I have some ideas for the both of them to make'em look better a bit but I'll do that in a little while because I need to get a few things before. Any way here are 2 scenes (even though they are almost the same stuff) put trough the pipeline.

As you all will know if you were in class or spoke to anyone - workbooks were to be handed in to Mark on the server, in his handins.
Check the group folder in /workbook for new uploads.
If your workbooks are not there, just do them yourself. As discussed, all rough L/O should really be completed by this Monday. Don't be surprised if the group asks for changes! The film is getting plus-ed like crazy from all this work we've done on it.
Remember, if the group doesn't see the work, then you didn't do it! End of story.

Judge Final Pack Touchups

Folder labels!

Here's the template! I scanned in the page of the book that explains the thing in detail - it's from Animation Background Layout: From Student to Professional. I highly recommend it to everyone, it's the most useful book out there for tricky layout stuff such as labeling and all that technical crap. It might be out of print though, so if you decide you'd like to buy it, you could try through Mike's site. However, you should probably e-mail him before you buy anything because the site may be out of date - his address still says he's in Miramichi, but he moved back to Toronto a while back.

I'll still have my copy at school though.

Oh! In case it wasn't clear. You fill the label out, and tape it to your scene folder, on the right hand side. On the left hand side of the folder, you paste that scene's storyboard panels. I could do a whole other post about how the inside is organized, but I think that can be covered in the studio - I'll paste some sheets up on the wall!

These two documents will be up on the server on Monday morning!

They have total score points from all your scenes and time. please check to see if all your scenes are there, if not just tell me what to fix when you see me. Or if you dont understand what those stupid boxes table looking thing is about just ask.

Also, if you are wondering if you enough layout points, the minimum according to these tables is 7 points. go nuts, knock yourself out.

CLICK & FILL - picking from a color palette for each scene it is absolutely imperative that there be NO WHITE DOTS. there are ways to check this quite easily - which involves making a new layer underneath and click filling it BLACK then doing a quick zoom in all over.

step 2:
TEXTURE & TONES (if needed) - i will figure out (with help from cristian hopefully!) a way to upload some custom brushes (texture and size) specifically for certain scenes and environments

FINAL LINE - this will be in another custom brush (texture and size) and will just be a matter of free handing (carefully) over certain elements of the environment (a bit tedious, but it's a nice look!)

Rough mock-up for title/correction. I like the typewriter vs marker, though the marker should be messier. Used a default marker brush in Painter. I feel it's important to be able to read both the original text and the correction clearly.

What I have done for the replacement for the end of the memory change. I think it could use a more broad action for the actual memory screening, but I guess at this stage that's more of a workbook decision. First two panels are just different options. Thought I'd show you all on here since I didn't print them out for the meetings.

Jump, match, and cuts on an action

Just so there's no confusion on the matter -

Match cut: Joining two different-sized shots of the same scene (like a medium shot and a close-up) to create the illusion of continuity.
Action match cut: Type of match cut made on a movement. The movement “flows” across the cut, maintaining direction and speed.
Jump cut: Usually signals that time has elapsed or something has been omitted from scene.

A shot transition that omits parts of an event, as if had ellipses (…) in plot
· Also a cut with too-similar framing
· Or with straight angle but different people (they look like they morph!)
It’s what you would do if you had no training in editing and just cut pieces of a story together
· It usually looks like a mistake!

Master Painting Possibilities

As far as paintings of JUST heaven go, I'm finding it nearly impossible to dig anything up. Got some ideas for angels (both adult and cherub) and angels in heaven.

Technically Cupid, but same ageless yet defined body type.
Pseudo-sexualized beautiful figure.
Obviously, with these first two - can't really parody/reproduce for our purposes because they have the wrong setting.
This is the piece I personally feel we should look towards as a group if we go in this direction.
More examples of hot men in clouds, not particularly heavenly though.
Not a great photo, but if you notice the angels holding up the pillars... I think that would work also.
Great inspiration for cherub babies.

And a couple images just for fun!! Nothing to do with preproduction for the film.
Mel's photo with the sweet, adorable nuns! We are sneaky.
Makes me laugh, especially since the arrow pointed north.
Maybe has a little bit to do with preproduction - a prison door which reminds me of the concept piece Hernando drew for Ecks' classroom.

I revised him a bit. But for the most part I keept him the same. Reason beeing that his shape and the shape and proportion of his limbs while they look humanish (except proportions) there is something not human about him. I don't remember us disgussing if he is human or not. will a human judge another human? so i thought why not just look humanish but just something wierd about him. like he doesn't belong on earth. Also i left the top of his hair preety flat looking since it goes with the very flat style we have.

A page of girls. Tried to remember Angela's designs while I was doodling, didn't visually reference them though.

Crappy sketch of me thinking "does Ecks look like a pug in profile?". Kinda scary.

Ecks that I drew I forget when. Trying to make the old lady as opposite as possible (big round nose vs. small angular, round glasses vs. angular, no neck vs. yes neck, lips go in vs. lips go out... but as Adam's keeps telling me, I need to get to nailing down a distinct silhouette for her that does the same thing her face is doing now). And birds. Birds are fun.

Projectionist design progress

Still in progress but before I go back to the drawing board I was hopeing to get some feedback. I took the design in the funpack and pushed it a bit. I was thinking the eyebrows to go down to his beard almost covering his full face, but when they raise they reaveal big owl-like eyes.

Eternal Court Research and Roughs

First image is what I am proposing for the Eternal Court design. It has art deco design and architectural elements which will help identify it as being a courtroom. What you're seeing on the "floor" is a reflection.

Next two pages are research sketches with a few notes about what they might be used for. Mostly just included for the curious to see.

The jist of how I envision the projectionist and the additional columns being situated within the space. I prefer the round columns to the square ones. Columns would need to be treated as an overlay and the big guy needs a better way of being part of the floor which is not a bottom half of stone. Maybe his colour just blends right in to the floor and he has no reflection? Maybe with no bottom line to disconnect him?

Let me know your thoughts on whether this direction has any legs.

Starting by posting my sketches.
Giant blue lady on the right there had a fan. Apparently she's interesting! Red one is my favourite, to be frank.
Some giant floating heads I made to fit with the blue girl while trying to keep the visual interest.

Alright, hopefully I got your attention and you're now commited to reading this wonderful post.

(A friendly reminder that you ahould be checking the blog every day. Just in case any of you forgot. And while we're on the topic, I added everyone else who wasn't on the e-mail notification list for comments posted on the blog. This should have been done a long time ago. You're welcome.)

Anyway, on with the actual point of this post. After viewing the awesome Vinni Puh, Amber pointed me to this awesome short of Sherlock Holmes, also in Russian (but with English subs). I posted part 2, but there's good stuff (and a hilarious moment) in part 1.

I know I'll be stirring shit with this, but I really like the look of it. And I think the animation techniques used would make for a great unified look, because everyone would be animating with the same "cutouts". End result - a tight looking film. It would make for a great experiment for us, as it would be a new technique. I understand that the group might be very much against it because of the limited animation style. I could defend this point by saying that tackling a style like this would look great on anyone's demo/portfolio next to full out animation stuff as it would show great versatility and an open mind, BUT I won't ram it down anyone's throat. This is a group project. But I'd really appreciate it if THE WHOLE GROUP would watch this example, and consider everything in it, from designs, to layouts, to animation, EVERYTHING.

I keep saying I'm going to post, doing it now so I can close the browser and be done with it.
Example of flat textures in BG with the flat characters in flat colour. May as well not have any tone on them at all, all the gradients and soft edges. Take from it what you will.

Hey guys (mostly Story crew)! I was looking over my sequence and thought I'd check if I understood what has changed in it alright. I also made a few minor changes in the order of the panels, added re-uses, planed to change the composition of the vertical pan (available as a wider shot for sc 11 and we can use a smaller field size for the sc 14 re-use), and I think I cut one shot as a result - is this alright with you guys? If not, I can make the original version as well. Lemme know?

*UPDATE* I also see a problem with the main judge using his hand to halt the projection in scene 5 - it defies the "puppet" logic that we're trying to establish in the scene. I'd rather draw him in a pensive pose instead, making his judgement. Any opposition to that?

*UPDATE NUMÉRO DEUX!* I feel a bit like a mom for saying this, but remember to use your own TV safe area (at least 90%, 80% and you should be more than safe - I forget exactly what the title safe area % is, but I know it's even less according to Mark, but I think I remember 70%...) when drawing your boards - it's not included on our group template!

*UPDATE the third* (I hope you're still reading) For continuity's sake, DOES THE MAIN JUDGE HAVE A GAVEL AT HIS CHAIR?? Or, you know, hammer space? You think Natalie's cool with hammer space?
